MMD, I spent a couple interesting and informative hours Sunday
evening in the MMD Archives. I was specifically looking for
information on themed music rolls. There is an abundance of
information available but I did not find answers to my specific
questions.
A few weeks ago I acquired a Steinway XR Duo-Art and the limited
number of Duo-Art rolls I possess did not contain much musical variety.
I was aware that the Themodist rolls as well as the Duo-Art rolls
possess the Theme 'snakebite' punchings. However, in looking over my
roll collection, I discovered that I had two other makes of rolls with
snakebites: Metro-Art, produced by Aeolian, and Universal rolls, with
no manufacturer listed.
My questions are (1) who produced the Universal Rolls, (2) do the
Universal roll snakebites function the same as the Duo-Art, and
(3) were there any other brands of rolls that possess snakebites?
Lastly, if anyone has collections of snakebite rolls and would like to
sell them please get in touch.
Thanks,
Tom Hutchinson
[ The Universal Music Company of New York, owned by Aeolian,
[ made themed piano rolls bearing several different brand names
[ including Aeolian, Duo-Art, Universal and Themostyle. The
[ use of the Theme perforations for accenting is the same in all
[ systems, including Duo-Art. I'm sure other brands employed
[ the Themodist or Solodant 'snakebite' accents but I don't know
[ who they are. Some Aeolian/Universal labels are pictured at
