Woodworm Infestation and Treatment
By Dick Hack

I bought a Welte orchestrion from England about 25 years ago with
woodworm damage, and was told by one of our best exterminators in the
area that methyl bromide was what they used to use, but that Vikane
is safer for the leather and other materials. I didn't know for sure
if the woodworm was active, but had the job done anyway to be safe.

There is a lot of information on the internet about Vikane [sulfuryl
fluoride], about the difference in Vikane and methyl bromide, and
about the safety of Vikane. Here are just two of the better links:

EPA info:
http://www.epa.gov/spdpublc/mbr/casestudies/volume2/sulfury2.html

Safety:
http://orgs.sa.ucsb.edu/tenants/hot_topics_files/Vikane%20Facts%20Sheet.pdf

The exterminator tented the Welte and fumigated it with Vikane. The
orchestrion was then restored and is playing nicely today.
