I, too, have some church organ ranks that I hope to build a band
or cart organ with. I asked about this on the MMD last year,
and most of the responses were supportive and positive.
My own take is that wooden pipes are best, probably with the toe
tubes cut shorter. Metal pipes are heavy and prone to bending and
"creeping" if not kept perfectly upright. Very small high-pitched
metal pipes may be okay, and are in fact used in new crank organs.
You will end up not using the lower, longer octaves of most ranks,
except for a few bass pipes.
Old consoles seem to have no value, except to hobbyists building
an electronic organ into the console, as a friend of mine did very
successfully. (He also wired it to several ranks of pipes around
his living and dining rooms).
1928 was in the days of high wind pressures and romantic voicing,
which are out of favor in today's church and concert organ worlds,
but maybe just right for band organ work.
Just my two cents.
