Hot Hide Glue Headache
By Don Teach
If you are getting a headache it would be wise to clean your glue pot.
Fresh glue with clean water will make a great glue joint. You can
consult the material data sheet. I use a very good grade of hot hide
glue that is almost clear in color, with no fumes and no bad smell.
I don't see any reason for a headache unless you are looking for an
excuse to use to other type of glue. I use only hide glue in player
piano restoration for the many reasons I have stated before on this
forum.
Rubber cloth and other materials don't last forever and in many cases
only last for 15 to twenty years before the player part needs to be
restored and reglued. Any other glue is asking for trouble in a player
piano, but then I get paid to redo those players that have been done
with other types of glue and I guarantee you that someone will get paid
to redo the mess created by other types of glue.
We all have skeletons in our rebuilding closet and now is a good time
to start using hot hide glue to reduce the number of skeletons you are
leaving behind.
