House on the Rock Music Machines
By Tom Gregory

Below is a posting I placed on PipeChat a few weeks ago regarding
the House On The Rock. Some will disagree with my conclusions,
but I believe this is one of the worst tourist traps in Wisconsin!

I was born/raised in a small city, Reedsburg, about 30 miles from
Spring Green and The House On The Rock and have visited this Wisconsin
tourist trap on more than one occasion.

With the exception of a view from the original house, there is little
opportunity to see the beautiful countryside. The remainder of the
tour is on ground level and totally enclosed. If you are handicapped,
claustrophobic or have small children, I suggest you avoid the place
-- much walking, many steps, and strollers are not allowed.

The mechanical musical instruments are poorly maintained. Those that
do work are reinforced with pre-recorded soundtracks. The organ room
has a multi-manual console which is impressive to view. I don't
believe it is connected to any of the pipes in the room.

If anyone wishes to travel to the south central Wisconsin, may
I suggest:

(1) The Circus World Museum in Baraboo. Operated by the Wisconsin
State Historical Society, the museum has one of the largest collection
of circus memorabilia, including hundreds of restored circus wagons.
The museum also has several restored mechanical musical instruments
that are demonstrated throughout the day.

(2) The Al Ringling Theater on the city square in Baraboo has daily
tours (free of charge, but donations are appreciated). The theater
has a restored 3/12 Barton theater organ which is open for visitors
to play.

(3) For those who appreciate quality theater, the American Players
Theater, located near Spring Green is noted for their outstanding
Shakespeare productions. Advance tickets are a necessity -- most
productions are sold out weeks in advance.

(4) Frank Lloyd Wright's home and school, Taliesin, is also located
near Spring Green. Guided tours are available through the summer.

(5) Of course, there is always Wisconsin Dells, one of Wisconsin's
best known tourist spots (traps!). The Upper Dells boat trip is
enjoyable. If you or your family enjoy water parks, there are several
to choose from.

Best wishes,
Tom Gregory
Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA

P.S. I am sure there are others who may have an entirely different
view of the House On The Rock. I speak from my personal experience.
