Wurlitzer Organ Pitch & Tuning Organ Bells
By Doug Hershberger

We've had some discussion on the pitch of Wurlitzer band organs.
We have read and heard that it is impossible or undesirable to try
to drag a band organ to standard pitch; that they are what they are
and that's how they were made. We've heard of musicians bleating that
they can't "play between the keys". We've heard that the note stamped
on the pipe is invariably not the note it sounds but a half or whole
step off.

In view of this then I ask: what about the bells that are plastered
across the front of a significant number of organs? Were each of these
bell bars also off-tuned to match the organ? I think the bell bars are
also stamped with their note. It seems incredible that every bell had
to be tuned to the organ on which it was stuck and even so then what
about those added later, presumably ripped off some other organ? Is it
so easy to tune a bell bar? Just curious.
