I went to an estate sale in Hudson, Ohio, where they have a Chickering
Ampico grand. Looks to be all original, has an unusual (to me) light
case, not really limed oak but very pale like that furniture of the
1930s. Some finish problems on the top right, maybe a vase was there.
Pretty simple case and double legs at the end. Decals say "Chickering
Boston" and "The AMPICO" at the right. Nice art nouveau-like drawer
controls with a plaque in the drawer saying it was presented December
25, 1928. It still belongs to that original family.
Some of the key edges are chipped, and of course the tubing is falling
apart. For someone who wants to restore it, it could be a pretty
piano. It's not far out of tune, though I don't know how often it was
maintained. I think the serial number is 136776, there is a no. 59
below that.
