Synthetic Glues and Sealants
By Richard Moody

The RTV adhesive that Paddy Handscombe writes about is from the UK,
it seems. I wonder what the equivalent is here in North America.
It is not the PVC-e white water thinnable glue that Player Piano Co.
and Schaff Piano sells, I am guessing.

The claim was made that the pneumatics hold tight but can be taken off
by sliding a blade along under the glue joint. This does not happen
with PVC-e or hide glue or the white "cow" glues like Elmer's. If the
pneumatics do let loose in this manner that would be of interest to the
next rebuilders.

I worked in a rebuilding shop in San Francisco in the middle 1970s
and we thought the next rebuild after our nylon cloth glued with PVC-e
plastic glue to the pneumatics and PVC-e to glue the pneumatics to the
deck wouldn't happen since the cloth was supposed to last for ever.
Even if it did, the lower plates of the pneumatics would probably
shatter when pried off once again, so new ones would be in order and
the deck surface would be resurfaced to take the new plates. With all
that it might be cheaper to buy a new stack from Universal, valves and
all, and custom fit it. We shall see.
