The 'roll' played on the 'player' in "The Music Box" is "The King's
Horses", which is on a late Capitol A-Roll as well as QRS 5108 arranged
by Max Kortlander. The piano isn't really playing as it is a prop, but
in all probability it's either Hatley or Shields accompanying the boys
live, off-camera.
"Way Out West" features a great duet to another oldie, "Trail Of The
Lonesome Pine," that's on QRS 998, arranged by J. Lawrence Cook. Who
can ever forget their number (with a drunken Mae Busche) The Boys'
Rendition of "The Old Spinning Wheel" from their 1934 three-reeler,
"Them Thar Hills". The tune is on black label Clark 1425 as well as
QRS 5774 (Walter Redding).
"The Curse Of An Aching Heart," from the 1930 short "Blotto", even
makes it to John Farrell's great new Jam A4 A-Roll, transcribed from
a Ralph Sutton recording (probably the best version you'll ever hear!).
The roll is available from John Motto-Ros.
In addition, there's "I Want To Go Back To Michigan (Down On The Farm)',
written by Irving Berlin in 1914 and sung by Laurel and Hardy in their
first feature film, "Pardon Us," from 1930. You can find it on an
Automatic A-Roll (I have a copy somewhere) from that era, but not on QRS.
I heartily recommend the CD, "The Beau Hunks Play The Original Laurel
& Hardy Music", on Music Select Audio 99025, for all of you music buffs
out there who can't get those catchy Laurel and Hardy & Hal Roach
soundtracks out of your minds. This demanding group of musical purists
plays them perfectly!
Fraternally Yours,
Mark Forer
