MMD, There have been several responses on the question of which
adhesives are best for affixing labels to roll leaders and boxes.
Here's my contribution.
A couple years ago I decided to tackle my collection of several
thousand unrepaired rolls that were simply stored in boxes. These
rolls needed every thing from new leaders and pull tabs to new boxes.
But the one thing that they all needed was new labels. I purchased
the John Miller label making soft ware which is an incredible program.
I decided to put a label on each end of the box and one on the leader.
So we made three labels for each roll and replaced the old ones with
a new unless the old were exceptionally clean. If the original on the
leader was in good shape the extra one was simply put in the box as
a spare. Since this was to be a large production operation dealing
with large quantities of rolls over many months I developed special
techniques for label application. I experimented with a lot of
different adhesives.
The only quick and efficient adhesive is a spray. If I remember
correctly I think we tried six different brands before choosing
"Crafts Etc! Spray Adhesive". I purchased it through Hobby Lobby and
the cost was about $4.50 per can. One can glues on a lot of labels.
The secret, we found, was to spray a thin coat on both surfaces and
allow a minute or two for the glue to get tacky before putting the
surfaces together. This adhesive dries completely flexible, thus I've
never noted any problem with labels on the leaders. The only problem
I've noted is that there is some minor problem when labels were applied
to the raw cardboard of new boxes.
A helper and I repaired on average 20-40 rolls per day and over the
course of a year we did several thousand rolls. Hope this helps.
