What type of glue is best for gluing labels on piano rolls? I recently
purchased a (non-QRS) roll that was produced in the last ten years or
so, and the label was glued on the roll with a very hard glue that is
not very pliable. When you start to unwind the roll in order to play
it, you can see that the label has a distinctly curved shape like the
roll.
Normally, it would take just a few turns on the take-up spool to make
the roll tight enough to play properly. However, this particular roll
has a very short leader so there is insufficient tightening before the
roll starts to play. Because of the hard glue on the label, the roll
billows out and you get that awful sound of all the keys trying to play
at once.
I've thought about removing the label using a hair dryer or other means
and then re-gluing it with an adhesive that is more flexible. But I'm
not sure what type of glue was used on this roll originally.
That leads to another question: what type of glue should be used
to affix labels to piano rolls? The glue needs to be strong enough
without drying out too soon, but it also needs to be flexible so that
it does not interfere with roll-playing. Any recommendations?
