Progressive Jazz on Piano Rolls
By Bruce Grimes

First, let me thank the several of you who've replied to my inquiry
about progressive jazz on rolls. I have three titles so far: One as
below for John Guarnieri hand-played 88-note Play-Rite rolls made in
the late 1970s. Does anybody know where I might find or listen to
this piece, and "Lullaby of Birdland," QRS?

In response to why my interest: Didja ever come across "'Like Young?"
I'm ready to get out my tape and edit and code it, but it's too short
to do alone. It feels like for that kind of music it should be a long
roll, something like late '50's beatnik mood music: a low lit coffee
house -- something to put your heals up & smoke a joint to...

Something Frank Milne never did, but he might have if he were another
generation later, but who knows. "Ching Chong" is 1920s and all about
a San Francisco opium den; Maybe Milne had his chance and passed it up.
Who knows...
