I am preparing to record some Christmas music on the Aeolian organ
and one of the rolls is "Cantique de Noel" (O Holy Night) played by
Archer Gibson.
My copy of that roll, 3618, is in mint condition, but the copy was
made late in production and shows many perforation errors. There are
hanging chads, which is evidence of a perforator problem. Also present
are uneven or broken chain bridging which suggests a worn out master
copy or also a bad perforator. In some areas, corrections made by hand
punching can be seen. I have corrected many obvious errors.
One possible error is still a puzzlement. The roll introduction
begins, in true Archer Gibson style, playing for the hard of hearing,
with a full organ. When the verse first appears, it is a beautiful
trumpet solo on the great (lower holes), at a much softer overall
registration. The very first note (tenor E) should repeat, for the
words, "O Holy", but on my roll, it is an extended note with no break.
When that melody is repeated, the note does repeat on the second pass.
I am wondering if other owners of this roll could check their copies
to verify if this is indeed the way the music is played by Gibson.
I do know that many of the Gibson rolls don't repeat certain notes as
one would expect. It is for this reason that I am puzzled. Any help
would be most welcome.
