Mister Rogers & QRS Music Roll Production
By Mike Walter

Hi all, George Karpel had made an inquiry if Rudy Martin appeared
in the QRS segment of Mister Rogers. Yes, that was Rudy who had
appeared in the segment.

Mister Rogers introduced a bit of trick photography in that segment.
Mister Rogers or his staff was actually providing the music in the
background of the segment. That piano is not capable of recording live
performances. To record any music on the piano, keys are depressed and
a foot pedal is also depressed to punch holes corresponding to the keys
held down on a master roll. The duration of a note on the master roll
depends on how many consecutive cycles the perforator makes with a key
depressed. The arranger must determine the number of punches per
measure before starting to make a roll, and then sticks to that formula
throughout the duration of the roll.

If you are in the area and have the opportunity, you should try to visit
the factory at 1026 Niagara St. in Buffalo, NY, for a tour. Tours are
given at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. It is advisable, but not necessary to call
ahead of time (716-885-4600).

Best wishes,
Mike Walter
