Valve Parts for Amphion Upside Down Unit Valves
Hello Daniel,
While I am not familiar with the website you mentioned, I am familiar
with the upside down Amphion valve, and I make a replacement for the
outside seat. The later "rightside up" valve outside seat cannot be
used on the earlier "upside down" valves, because there is not enough
material above the valve poppet for the stamped-metal outside valve seat
to be inserted.
I make a 1.010" OD PVC outside valve seat, which has a 0.94 ID counter-
bore and a 0.50 diameter hole, with a raised rim simulating the original
grommetted wood cap.
In use, this machined plastic piece is inverted from the later stamped
metal seats, and can be used without having to modify the body of the
valve. Valve travel can be adjusted by pressing the seat further in or
out before it is sealed in place with burnt shellac.
Amphion used several different outside-seat port diameters. The double-
valve stacks usually used a 0.500" hole, while single-valve systems used
either 0.438 or 0.375 diameter holes. I have tooling for any of these.
I have attached [to the reply sent to Daniel Cox] a couple of images
from an early run of these. They will give you an insight into the
idea. I am not in the machine shop business, but being a serious
restorer, I have the ability to make anything I need for my restora-
tions. I might be able to make you a set if you are not in too much of
a hurry.
Don't forget to replace the pouches. The valves are easy to split
apart, and with a vacuum pouch setter, it is a piece of cake to replace
the pouches. Zephir-skin pouches absolutely should be replaced, and the
tan-pouch-leather ones probably should be replaced.
