I've rescued a very nice old 1913 Strohber upright from certain
destruction. Sadly, a gutted player, but it's a beautiful piano.
According to the information at John Tuttle's site, this player used
either a Standard, a Gulbransen, or a Pratt-Read action. I believe it
used the latter, because this piano has very short stickers, and therefore
had to be a two-tier action. The Standard is ruled out because there is
no S on the pedals. To my knowledge, Gulbransen never had a two tier. The
pedals (present) simply slide into the toe board of the piano. This piano
is no deeper than a plain upright; the spoolbox was located above the
hammer line, like Cable inner players, and some Kimballs.
The piano has a scale count of 26 bass, 27 mid, and 35 treble. The
wippens are exactly like those in an ordinary upright, but with regulating
buttons drilled through them. The front panel tells me that this is not a
conversion.
If anyone has a spare small two-tier action, please let me know. I'd be
glad to pay for it and shipping. I'm thinking either a Pratt-Read, a
Cable inner player, or a universal could be adapted to it. There is no
room for a three tier. The scale count, while important, is not as
important as the mechanism being small enough to fit under the wippens.
Thanks in advance,
Andy Taylor
