Evapo-rust -- Doesn't Work on Zinc Disks
Hi Jim,
The easiest place to get Evapo-rust is AutoZone stores. It's about $8 a
quart, but they don't carry gallons. If you can find an industrial
supply house, they have it by the gallon at about $22, or a bit less if
you ask nicely. That's where I get it. There's a place in Buffalo and
Rochester called Hanes Supply, and they sell it for a bit less. You
can always call the manufacturer (Harris International Laboratories)
for a nearby distributor. Website: http://www.evapo-rust.com/
Notice the hyphen. Without the hyphen, it's another company that just
sells it.
Let me tell you, Evapo-rust is really great stuff for removing ferrous
rust in general. Just toss the part in a jar of Evapo-rust and the
next morning it's like new. I usually polish it a bit with a wire
brush to make it look shiny. I only wish I had some stock in the
company. Look it up on the web. There are several places that buy from
the company and repackage it at a higher price for special uses, like
antique car restoration. Or de-rusting your Sherman tank. You can also
put Evapo-rust on a pad and apply it, if you can't dunk the part.
Good luck,
Craig Smith
BTW -- Evapo-rust won't work on zinc disks because they don't have any
iron in them. Steel disks clean up pretty nicely. Even better if you
knock off all those little metal tabs on the back of the disk that get
in the way of polishing.
[ I believe Craig is just kidding here about the tabs. Polyphon,
[ Symphonion, and Regina makers seemed to feel tabs were important.
