I have an American (1915) Red Welte Vorsetzer that is restored and
working, but I want to replace the washing machine motor that is now in
it with the original 2-speed DC motor (and resistor), so that it will
have two speeds and be historically correct.
I have a like-new Emerson DC motor from a Chickering 1923 Grand I would
like to use in the Welte Vorsetzer. I installed a bridge rectifier on
it, and it runs fine, except that it won't start on its own.
What is wrong with it? Do I need a specialized rectifier, or what? I
have taken it to several motor shops, but they don't understand 20's DC
motors and can't help me. Maybe the Emerson has a burned-out starter,
but I don't know how to test it for that.
Please help,
Dean Howe
