Attention MMD, MBSI, and AMICA members. At the next West Coast Ragtime
Festival to be held November 17-19, 2006, the following workshop will
be held on Saturday, November 18, at 10:00 A.M.:
RAGTIME'S MECHANICAL PARTNER
Stephen Kent Goodman, ragtime orchestra and band leader, arranger,
composer, and collector/restorer of automatic musical instruments, will
illustrate how the development and public use of coin-operated player
pianos, orchestrions, band organs, and other automatic musical
instruments influenced the spread of ragtime, and inversely, how
hearing ragtime on these machines promoted their use and aided in their
marketing.
You will hear some really rare tunes: rags found only on nickelodeon or
orchestrion rolls, but not in print or on piano rolls. Appreciation
goes to fellow AMICA and MBSI members for sharing rarities from their
collections especially for this presentation, and a special thank-you
to John and Nadine Motto-Ros.
Contact the West Coast Ragtime Society for more festival information
and tickets: POB 13346, Sacramento CA 95813 (http://www.westcoastragtime.com)
Mr. Goodman is not only engaged in automatic musical instrument
restoration, but he is also an independent composer and arranger for
MIDI and other paper-roll projects. (He will not be associated with
Valley Forge Music Rolls, as announced in the 06.0510 MMD.) To contact
