We need a good source of _rubber_ (not polymer) stamps for music rolls.
Hello, MMD readers -- I have been using rubber stamps on my rolls since
the mid-1950s, and when my third niche enterprise, Artcraft Music
Rolls, began in 1982 everything was redesigned for a "new look" which
remains on our releases through the present time.
One by one, the rubber stamp businesses in Maine have folded. The
enterprise in Lisbon, Maine, that I used for about four decades
(including for stamps designed for The Musical Wonder House museum),
just closed, ending an era of the Ludlow typesetting/casting activities
in this region. On occasion, such as for "The Boston Medley" roll
(AMICA Convention 1989), I used InkaDinkaDoo in Massachusetts, but they
don't seem to answer my inquiries today from another address in Woburn,
Mass.
The several stamps which I did have made in Maine recently were sold as
"rubber" but turned out to be made of short-lived polymer, which also
is hard on the hands when large stamps (3" x 5" size) are used,
especially for the illustrations printed on certain rolls, which are
even larger than these average dimensions.
Does anybody have a suggestion of where to go for future rubber stamps?
One amazing thing is that the "Reroll" stamp of 1982 is still going
strong. Meanwhile, some others, which are only about 10 years old, and
not used that frequently, seem to be wearing out. Perhaps alchemy is
involved with the making of rubber stamps!
The stamp sources in Maine seem to be focused in scrapbook work and
fancy 'craft' activities, not the business stamps which, with larger
typefaces, would be used on my Artcraft rolls. I'm making do with three
polymer substitutes, but I wish to return again to genuine rubber. Any
information for a source would be deeply appreciated.
