Seek Piano Plate for Link Orchestrion
By Glenn Thomas

Thanks to all who responded to my June 17 posting where I asked for
ideas on replacing or repairing the water damaged bent piano plate
in a Link Style A Orchestrion.

To recap, my Link has a Haddorf piano, serial no. 94479, dating to
1921. It is a 3/4 plate with octave or pin breaks at 28 bass, 30
tenor, and 30 treble. It had been warped and repaired as a result
of water damage, but the integrity of the plate was compromised to
the point it could not take and would not hold a tuning. The plate
continued to stretch and retract from the case, to the point that it
needed to be replaced with a comparable piano.

Most of the replies suggested the best course of action was repairing
the existing plate and offered suggestions on how to do that. A few
agreed with my technician's original diagnosis that a replacement piano
was the best way to proceed.

After further review and another evaluation, we have concluded that we
really need to replace the piano plate. One respondent thought he
might have a comparable piano and that dialog remains open.

So now, my quest becomes more focused: I need a comparable piano
where at least the plate can replace the one in my Link. To those
knowledgeable on pianos, what makes of pianos use the same plate?
To those with warehouses or barns full of derelict uprights or players,
might you have one with a comparable plate?

I would love to bring the piano in this wonderful machine back to life!

Thank you,
Glenn Thomas
