Dear Group, This Popper Konzertist upright belongs to a close friend
of mine who has asked me to post it here and to answer any questions
a prospective buyer may have. I have no financial motivation
personally, sale or no sale.
I removed everything in order to take pictures and give it some
cleaning but everything is back in the piano including the proper
screws and wing fasteners for all components. Piano is almost complete
but is missing one small moulding on the front top panel and (hardly
surprising) its pair of light fixtures, although the brass mounting
plates and shielded wiring are still there. The Konzertist is missing
the bottom front door but a suitable substitute can be found if
necessary for the sale.
It kind of looks like No. 5 on page 588 of Bowers' "Encyclopedia" but
email me for lots of pictures of everything. Matched walnut veneer is
still beautiful, minor dings here and there, original strings and bridges
and soundboard are all intact, will likely hold A435-440 tuning, bass
still throaty. Action felts moth-attacked and in need of replacement
but action is classic "stout and sturdy" German quality above most
other upright actions of any origin.
Player action is also of superb, almost insane German quality, thick
lead tubing all intact, some pneumatics finished with paper along edges
and the pump is the largest I've ever seen in any piano without other
instrumentation. Best of all, this piano remains "un-molested," and
one of the best original condition players I've ever looked at.
Popper tracker scale layout would allow the addition of other
instrumentation if other Popper orchestrion rolls are sitting in your
closet. The trackerbar has many unused holes that could be tubed to
make use of them. From "Treasures of Mechanical Music", by Reblitz and
Bowers, the scale is:
7 soft pedal on
8 soft pedal off
9 mandolin on
10 mandolin off
11-39 playing notes
40-41 blank
42 accent
43-44 blank
45 shutoff
46 rewind
47-49 blank
50-78 playing notes
79 sustain on
80-87 blank
88 sustain off
13-3/4" wide note sheet
Asking $1200 or best offer/trade for ? No bench, no rolls, located
