I am always fascinated when I read a post that has to do with what
seems to me, a totally unmanageable move of a player piano. I make
reference to the post of 06/29/06 where Eliyahu Shahar had a piano
moved from the States to Israel. I'd be interested to know the
details and cost of such a move. I wouldn't even know where to start.
Eliyahu, how about another post on this request?
I am from Long Island, New York. I see many player pianos for sale,
mostly on eBay, but they seem just out of reach even when they are
located in close-by New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware or Maryland.
How do you find and coordinate a move from these or other states?
It would be great if there were a clearing house of movers up and down
the East Coast, West Coast or even across the country that we could
coordinate with. Having a piano moved here in Long Island just from
one town to another, usually less then 25 miles, could easily cost over
$300.00.
I love to rebuild these old players and sell them to feed my ongoing
love for them, but I think we all know the selling price is at an all
time low. I think that most times we are all rebuilding these old
players for about $1.20 an hour.
So back to the moving! What's the deal on buying, let's say, a
Standard Action upright with a nice looking cabinet for $100.00? They
are a no-brainer to rebuild and they always turn out great. I can only
sell a piano like this for about $1200 to $1500 (without doing anything
much to the cabinet and not really doing too much to the "piano action"
itself). How could I possibly pay 4, 5, 6 or even $700.00 to have a
piano like this moved to me from one of these neighboring states?
I would be interested in hearing all your stories of coordinating
a piano move while at the same time watching your pennies. Also feel
free to mention movers names, phone numbers and the areas that they
would cover. I think this would be helpful to everyone.
