Hello all, I would like to second the expressions of Randy Hammond.
I have had the honor to restore three Mason and Hamlin "A"s, two
Chickering "59"s, a Steinway XR, and a late Steinway OR. All of
these instruments would still be unrestored and unused were it not for
the existence of e-valves and readily available e-rolls from scanned
originals. Their owners had been reluctant to invest the restoration
costs when the condition of their roll libraries was considered. One
owner of a Mason and Hamlin Ampico "B" was even considering gutting it
and having a Pianomation system installed.
All of these are now exemplary restorations, in all respects, capable
of playing as they did when they were new from paper rolls or from
digital files (e-rolls).
While demonstrating an e-valve system I have installed in a Franklin
Marque Ampico, I played a Rachmaninoff piece. The listener commented
afterwards that she had never heard it performed with such feeling.
She paused a moment, and then said, "If you had told me before that
I was going to hear what I have just heard I would not have believed
you." I will be restoring her piano soon.
