There must be another side to the "debate" about the appropriateness
of roll scanning. (I put "debate" in quotes because we see a lot
from the "good idea" folks, but little if anything from those who
oppose, so there doesn't seem to be much of a debate.)
Is it a feeling that there is a copyright violation, on legal or
ethical grounds? That scanned rolls could somehow end up as faked
originals? That the sudden appearance of a scanned version devalues
the collection of those who hold one of the only originals, making
their copy less unique and therefore less valuable?
Is it that it takes the fun out of pursuing rarity and the satisfaction
of filling a hole in one's collection, knowing that that rarity is now
readily available out there, albeit in another format?
