Hi Leslie, disc playing albums are unusual but are not really
rare. However, a musical movement marked Thorens is certainly
unusual and would be rather late in the production of musical albums.
(The earliest dated album I have is 1867, with a cylinder movement.
Thorens began in 1881.)
Thorens also made Edelweiss and Helvetica movements, and those
movements are more frequently found in albums. However, the album
movements are often not marked at all. In that case, I generally
experiment with discs to find which disc fits properly. I'll send
a photo of mine later today for the MMD Pictures gallery.
Congratulations on your purchase. There are many different styles
of albums, as well as many different "book" type music boxes. This
is a great example of a fairly affordable musical collectible. All
things musical do not have to be expensive to be collectible!
