Seeburg Right-angle Music Roll Drive
By David Sharpe

I am working on a Seeburg "L" or Junior and am having some trouble
with the roll drive.

The pictures I have seen of Seeburg L's show the driven wheel about
half way out the pump wheel, I would guess at least four inches from
the center. If I put my driven wheel there the music seems much too
fast. I can see grooves on the pump wheel where the tire rubber tire
must have worn away in the past and they are all between 1-1/2 and 3
inches from the center. I like the tempo when it is about 2 inches
out, but the wheel makes a squeaking sound at anything less than 3
inches. It seems to be that the contact point between tire and wheel
is more than just a point so that parts of it must slide against the
pump wheel at these small radii. It makes the noise even if turned
slowly by hand.

So I am wondering if my motor pulley is too large. Should the driven
wheel be about 4 inches from the center of the pump pulley for a
reasonable tempo of the music? The motor is the original 1150 RPM so
I don't think it is turning too fast. The motor pulley is about 2-1/2
inches in diameter. I found one question in the Archives about pulley
size for a Seeburg L, but I found no answer.

The gray or aluminum paint is worn off the pump pulley in the area
of use. Assuming the motor pulley size is correct, is there any
treatment, paint, sanding, etc. that might cure the squeaking?
