Last year I asked Steve Goodman what the best type of oil was to add
to the tops of the Emerson Motor in a Seeburg. He replied, "You need
to go to the finest motor shop and try to get the lightest grade motor
oil they have. It used to be called Russian oil. '3-in-1' could be
used, but it is a little too heavy. 3 or 4 drops per tube (take the
cap off)."
I guess the electric motor shops around Los Angeles aren't very fine,
'cause I've searched a lot since then and still cannot find this type
of light "Russian" oil. In fact, the repairmen don't even know what
I'm referring to. Any MMDers out there have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark Forer
[ I believe "Russian oil", like "Ohio oil", refers to most any
[ low-sulfur crude petroleum. See, e.g., the comparison of Shell
[ and Rosma (Russia) aviation lubrication products at
[ http://en.rosma.ru/production/index.phtml?640
[
[ I use non-detergent motor oil, SAE 30 or SAE 50, in the oil cups
[ of old 1150 rpm motors. I avoid "3-in-1" oil because it may contain
[ acid. See the article by Bernt Damm in 980812 MMDigest, also at
