A recent post mentioned the firm of Imhof & Mukle, and it reminded me
of an LP I once had which had a recording of one of their instruments
playing "Down South." This piece (or machine) must surely be the
Florence Foster Jenkins of mechanical music. Every time I got
depressed, I would put this on my turntable. When I calmed down,
I would continue my return to life with either Anna Russell's "Der
Ring des Nibelungen" or dear old Florence singing "Queen of the Night".
Unfortunately, all my tapes and LP's were trashed along with all my
other possessions when I could not renew my lease or pay rent while
comatose in the hospital.
Now that I am completely recovered, I've gotten new CD's of Florence
and Anna, but am dying to get "Down South" again. If anyone has access
to this masterpiece, I'll be most happy to pay for an audio cassette
or even a CD. The LP was originally purchased from Vestal Press and
featured a number of instruments, but I cannot recall the title of the
album.
Also, if anyone should happen to have the music for "Down South" I'd
like to get a copy so I could play it on the Mitsukoshi Wurlitzer where
I'll make a come-back from May. I'll be most grateful to hear from
someone who has a copy of this little gem.
Sincerely,
Vic Searle in Tokyo
