We welcome all amateur organ builders, organ grinders, lovers of
mechanical music and everyone else to our upcoming organ rally in
Coney Island, New York, on April 9th 2006, noon to 6:00 PM, on West
12th Street between Surf Ave. and the Boardwalk.
Bob Yorburg will be there with his new band organ. At least one
family is bringing a Molinari organ, which was built just a few blocks
from the rally. Among those who have responded are those bringing
band organs, "monkey" organs, a calliope and three player pianos.
To participate contact Todd Robbins at <ConeyIslandTodd@aol.com> or
Vincent Morgan, rally coordinator, at <vincent.morgan2@verizon.net>.
In 1933 Mayor La Guardia banned street music in NY City and especially
singled out organ grinders. In 1976 Mayor Lindsay repealed the law
and brought street music back, much to our delight here in the city.
But the organs have not returned. We plan to change that. This
historical event is co-sponsored by the Coney Island Museum and the
Lady Liberty Chapter of AMICA.
Even if you don't have an organ or other portable mechanical musical
instrument, please join us. We hope Mayor Bloomberg will too. The
New York Daily News has already jumped on this with an advance article.
We expect radio, TV and newsprint coverage of this historic event.
Be a part of it.
Vincent Morgan, NY City
