Mechanical Music and Technical Apparatus, Christies, South Kensington,
31 May, including the Gerald Stonehill Duo-Art roll library, the
collection of Mr. G. Acton Esq. and property from the collection of
Nic Costa.
Mr. G. Stonehill is known by many as an exclusive collector who for
many years has been trying to piece together the Duo-Art listings.
He has succeeded and his long wait and search has brought together
the largest and most comprehensive library of Duo-Art in the world.
Now, at Christies, this can be viewed and brought as it will be offered
as one lot in our forthcoming auction. Around 4000 rolls (without
copies) are included. Also from this collection:
- A unique Steinway Duo-Art grand reproducing piano, with 3-H opposed
action with crash valve operation, 3 pedals, date 1929, working
beautifully.
- The Iles-Stonehill Duo-Art electric push-up player robot, with
Aeolian 1935 B Drawer, electric roll drive, built in 1973 by Gordon
Butler Iles and used in recent Nimbus recordings in the 1990s which
won the Millennium Chopin Prize.
- A Weber Duo-Art pedal-electric reproducing grand piano in fiddle-back
mahogany case, 1932. (This was Mr. Stonehill's very first piano and
prompted his interest for this subject in 1959.)
And finally -- are you short of space to house your Duo-Art or other
player rolls? If so, there is a fine Breakfront roll cabinet,
decorated in black and gild lacquer in the eastern taste with holding
space for around 450 rolls.
Many thanks and I look forward to seeing you at the viewing when it
commences at 10.00 am on Saturday 27th May. For more information,
please contact me about this exciting sale.
Kind regards,
