I knew Carl Meyer for only a couple of years but in that time we became
good friends, he sharing his knowledge of pianos and Pianocorder systems
with me and I helping him with his computer(s) and their frustrations.
I spent many hours in his garage/shop just chatting on every topic
under the sun.
His background in electronics made him a natural for getting more out
of the Pianocorder system, his test bench had a number of special
boards and fixtures for testing and diagnosing problems in the circuit
boards of Pianocorder system. He was very interested in the technology
of the piano such as studying many (to me) esoteric details of how the
strings physically moved when struck and rescaling a piano when it was
time to replace the strings.
As Tom Lear mentioned, Carl had finally installed a Pianocorder in
a piano for his own use and he continued to improve up until the end,
never quite satisfied with some detail or another. The WinAmp plug-in
from Mark Fontana got quite a workout in Carl's shop!
Carl and I were about to restore a Kimball upright that I own, one that
already had a Pianocorder in it. I already plan to have the piano
restored in his memory.
I'll remember Carl most for his wit and wry sense of humor. On one
of my first visits when I was headed for his bathroom he called after
me, 'Mention my name, you'll get a good seat!'. Thanks, Carl. Rest
in Peace.
Sorry for rambling on...
