** Announcing the First Ever Organ Rally in New York City **
Sunday, April 9, from noon until 6 PM, Coney Island, Surf Ave. and
12th St., and possibly 10th St., near the Cyclone. Co-sponsored
by Coney Island USA and the Lady Liberty Chapter, AMICA, Intl.
Dear organ grinders, fair organ owners and owners of player pianos,
et al, I just came from a meeting with Todd Robbins, also known as
"Coney Island Todd", who would like to co-sponsor with the Lady Liberty
Chapter of AMICA the first band organ rally in New York City ever.
Street music was banned by Mayor La Guardia in the 1930s, but the law
was repealed by Mayor Lindsay in the 1970s. Unfortunately, the street
organs, organ grinders, etc., haven't returned, except to Mayor
Bloomberg's private parties.
The rally date has been set as Palm Sunday, April 9th, noon to 6 PM.
Since the date was already set and permits granted before talking to
me, we decided to go ahead with it even though it is a poor choice of
dates for many of us due to Holy Week and Passover.
The permits are all in hand. Everything is ready to go. Needed are
street organs of all sizes, calliopes, player pianos, Tanzbars and
a desire to make history while having fun.
Contact: Todd Robbins "Coney Island Todd" at <coneyislandtodd@aol.com>
or telephone 1-718-372-5159. Send him photos of your organs, calliopes,
player pianos, etc. Let Todd know of your special needs, such as
electricity, indoor space, etc.
This is an historical beginning. We hope to do something much bigger
later on and it could work into an annual event. Help us to bring
street organs back to New York City.
Vincent Morgan, Immediate Past President,
Lady Liberty Chapter, AMICA, Intl.
