Awhile back in 051113 MMDigest, Matt Jaro wanted to know some info on
some elusive Clark 4X rolls that he was compiling a data base on.
One of the rolls was Clark 4X196. I may be a tad tardy on this info,
and someone may have already beat me to it, but there's nothing like
a rainy January 2nd, with the umteenth re-running of the Rose Parade on
the tube, to get me off my duff and motivated to track down this stuff.
So here goes:
From my original Clark rolls Catalog of June 1928, I was able to find
out that Clark 4X-196 was called "Sparkling With Pep" and contained the
following numbers in order:
1. Stay Out Of the South, Fox Trot
2. I Still Love You, Fox Trot
3. Blue, Blue Moon, Waltz
4. Sweet Sue -- Just You, Fox Trot
5. Losing You, Fox Trot
6. In My Sweetheart's Arms, Waltz
7. Whisper Sweet and Whisper Low, Fox Trot
8. Coquette, Fox Trot
9. I Wish I Were Back In My Cradle, Waltz
10. Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man, Fox Trot
There's some good material here from the late 1920's. Sophie Tucker
made tune #1 famous, Al Jolson, #5. And everyone knows #10 from
"Showboat" introduced in 1927 by Helen Morgan as "Julie" and Tess
(Aunt Jemima) Gardella as "Queenie" in the blockbuster original
Broadway stage version.
Many of these tunes can be found on other, more "common" Play-Rite
recuts (as if any 4X roll can be called common) and a few original
Automatic G rolls that have surfaced over the past 10 years.
By the way, this exact tune lineup can be heard on Clark 951,
"International Hits", and in the same order. Notes in the margin of
the catalog state that this roll was ordered on 6/1/28. I know I have
an original copy somewhere "in the vault" but it's just too wet right
now to go out and hunt for it! Hope this helps.
