In the absence of solid evidence, here's a fuzzy recollection of an
unverifiable source. In college, at the dawn of CD recording, I seem
to remember the sound library owning a disc recording of a large Welte
instrument. The liner notes mentioned that it was ordered for the
R.M.S. Titanic, but was not completed in time for the maiden voyage
and thus spared the ship's fate. Perhaps a subscriber better informed
than this piano tuner knows of the recording or the instrument. It
makes a convincing tale, but also a convenient legend.
