The Future of Mechanical Music - Museums
By Andy Struble

Music for the teenagers

Hello all. The Music House Museum is working on expanding our
school/education programs. As the years pass by, even the standard
"oldies" from the 70's and 80's seem to be boring and passe to the
teenage crowd.

One thing that would be beneficial is to try to get or make arrangements
of music that would really catch the teenage attention. They seem to
have no connection to nostalgic music of the past that we all love.
What suggestions might come from the list as to music to entice the
teenage audience?

30 years ago we had "Star Wars" tunes, younger kids still love Disney
music. What new music do kids listen to today that translates well for
mechanical pianos or organs, if any? And what of the music of the last
five years will not become obsolete by the time we transcribe it? What
music from the last 20 years do teens today consider oldies that they
will still listen to? If we could come up with lists of appropriate
tunes, are there any out there who would be interested in arranging it?

Our instruments used to play all the new and exciting tunes of their
day, but now, 80 or more years later, most kids don't recognize anything
but the most popular band marches. How will we be able to get our next
generation interested in maintaining these wonderful machines if they
don't care to listen to the old music they play?

I realize this is a touchy subject, and I'm not suggesting that we abandon
the original music. But if we have occasions to play them for groups
of teens and upper grade school groups, shouldn't we at least try to do
something to really catch their attention? I'd love any suggestions.
