Player Piano Motor Runs Backward
By Spencer Chase

Motor Backwards! => !rotoM sdrawkcaB

Hello, The flywheel on most pumps is threaded on the main shaft
and must run in the intended direction or it may unscrew and fall off.
If there is a lock nut or pin this may not be a problem, but the
connecting rods are sometimes made such that one direction of rotation
is preferred. If the pump runs equally well in either direction and it
is not easy or possible to reverse the rotation of the motor, then
fixing the flywheel with a pin might be the solution.

Most common induction motors can be reversed by changing the wiring
[phase] relationship between the start and run windings. Reversing
the polarity of the start winding with respect to the run winding is
usually all that is necessary.

Some piano motors have external connections that make this quite easy.
If there are screw terminals on the outside for the connection of the
power leads, it may be the case that the start and run windings are
both connected there and all that is necessary to reverse the motor is
to swap one set of wires.

You can determine which wires are for the two sets of winding with
a multimeter because they are not interconnected and will only show
continuity between opposite ends of a winding when all wires are
disconnected. If this is not the case, it is necessary to disassemble
the motor and locate the internal connection between the windings.
This should be an easy job for a motor shop in case it is beyond the
capability of the piano technician.

Best regards,
Spencer Chase
