Using a Piano Tilter Safely
By Skip Downing

Greetings to all potentially embarrassed and injured piano tilting
types. Here's my two cents toward the ongoing discussion of how
to get the upright onto its back without drawing blood.

First thing I do is to lift each end of the piano (separately) and
slide a 2x4 or 4x4 under the piano, oriented from front to back,
resting on the bottom board, not the casters. In this manner the
piano is now totally off its casters. Be sure the 2x4s extend at
least 4 inches beyond the rear of the piano.

Insert the tilter under the rear of the piano and tilt it back
until the tines of the tilter contact the bottom board. Holding
the tilter in that position, pull the top of the piano back until
it rests on the tilter, then continue the journey to horizontal.

When standing the piano up again, be sure the rear bottom corner of
the piano contacts the 2x4s securely, and the casters miss the 2x4s
completely. This keeps the bottom from kicking out. Good luck and
safe journey.
