Alfredo Casella & Ottorino Respighi: The Composer as Pianist
(Pierian 0024)
To All: We are pleased to announce the arrival of the newest in the
series, "The Caswell Collection", the complete Welte recordings of the
celebrated pianist/composer Alfredo Casella, assisted by the composer
Ottorino Respighi. It is Volume Seven of the group, and includes a truly
beautiful arrangement of "The Fountains of Rome," the first of the three
tone poems about the "Eternal City" crafted in 1916 by Respighi. This
arrangement by the composer for piano four hands was recorded in New York
City in 1925; Respighi plays the bass part and Casella the treble.
In addition, all of Casella's Welte recordings are included, and a
couple of additional pieces by Respighi are played by others. It is
the work of the masterful Ken Caswell, making use of his splendid
Feurich Welte-Mignon instrument, assisted by Prof. Karl Miller of the
University in Austin, Texas.
Previous issues have included complete recordings of the rolls set down
by Debussy, Granados, Ravel and Scriabin, as well as recitals by two of
the most eminent women artists of the time: Fannie Bloomfield-Zeisler
and Teresa Carreño.
