Tom Hutchinson mentioned using rubber bands for piano roll repair.
I am looking for a source of replacement rubber bands, ones used for
holding the rolled-up roll in place in its box. I've used those bands
for hair from the health and beauty department of discount stores.
They work fine for a while; the bands are slightly too small and
because of this, they are stretched to the limit and tend to break
easily. In some cases, the quality of the rubber is not good.
I'm looking for a source where I can find the right sized band for a
piano roll available in small quantities. I've searched a number of
stores and online outlets. If they have the right size, then you have
to buy a gazillion of them. If they sell in small quantities, then
they have a limited number of sizes and not the one I need. Is there a
source that sells bands with both correct size and in small quantities?
There are some out there who believe that rubber bands should not be
used on rolls at all. What, then, should you use to secure the roll in
place? Should it remain loose? That's fine if the roll spends much of
its time sitting on a shelf but when shipping or transporting rolls,
something is needed to keep the roll in place. A loose roll shifting
in the box can become damaged.
I appreciate your suggestions on this.
