Value of Musical Box by Miroy Freres, Paris
By A. B. Bonds
I had the privilege of visiting with one of our university's long-time
employees (she just received her 50-year pin!) in a very gracious old
house in Nashville, Tennessee -- the essence of Southern living. Among
other curiosities she had a music box that her father had bought in an
estate sale during the 1930's.
The box itself was flat, about 8 inches high and 15 x 30 inches in
size. It had sculpted sides but no other adornment. It had been
converted into a low table by adding legs about 18" high, and there
was an extraordinary clock on top of it (but that's a different story).
Only four controls were visible, one knob on the front and two on the
right side by the nameplate, with a key also protruding from the
nameplate. The brass plate read (more or less in order):
Exposition Universelle De Londres
1851 Prize Medal
Tune List -- Airs
1. Polka de Jardin d'Hiver
2. Valse le Jasmin
3. Galop de Gustav
4. Le Ranz des Vaches
5. L'enfant Prodigue
6. La Favorite

Her story was that, while the box worked for many years, it was dropped
by movers and has not worked since.
She also had a fairly nice 15-1/2" Regina, but sadly it had been
electrified (at the request of her father) and she did not know how
much of the original machinery had been kept.
There is some pressure from a local museum for her to donate the Miroy
box since it came from a family of historic interest. As she is
getting on in years, she is interested in the history of the box and
ball-park value of both items for estate planning purposes. I would
appreciate any direction in this regard since it is out of my range
of expertise. I can give more details off-line and have pictures.
