Dear Folks, I think the stuff you want is isopropyl alcohol, which
is 97 percent pure alcohol. It is nearly free of water and other
contaminants. Rubbing alcohol is a different chemical structure and
has other stuff in it along with a higher water content. Use the
isopropyl for cleaning electronics like tape heads as well. It should
be available at most hardware stores.
Now, I guess if you wanted to drink up the residue, gin or vodka would
probably be available at the liquor store. In fact if you started
drinking it first, pretty soon the wood you wanted to clean might start
looking okay just the way it is! ;-)
