Hi Group,
Bill Sharkey said he had a Shaw upright piano, serial #28401, and that
Shaw was in New Jersey until the early 1900's, when they were bought out
by Charles Stieff, of Baltimore. His piano says "Shaw Piano Co.,
Baltimore," and he is wondering its age.
The 1926 Presto Buyers' Guide says, "This instrument was originally made
in Erie, Pa., the [company] being established over 20 years ago. In
1900 the Shaw business was purchased by Chas. M Stieff, Inc., of
Baltimore, Md., where the factory is located at 1640-42-44 Grosuch Ave."
The Pierce Piano Atlas, 10th edition says, "Shaw, Made by Stieff,
Baltimore, Md., Orig. made at Erie, Pa." From 1909 (22000) to 1915
(28000) the serial numbers start on an even thousand. So it would
appear that your piano was made in 1915.
