Haydn Flute Clocks & Skinner Residence Organ
By Philippe Rouillé

Dear MMDs, Our French AAIMM quarterly Journal publishes some articles
which may be of interest for you. (AAIMM = Association des Amis des
Instruments et de la Musique Mécanique, with more than 600 members).

One of these articles (in Nos 41 and 42, 2002) is about the four
known existing clocks playing some beautiful music by Haydn, and which
were made during Haydn's life, and probably under his supervision.
(Some were restored by Matthias Naeschke in Germany, another one by
the Utrecht Museum in Netherlands).

When writing this article, my aim was only to make available to
every enthusiast informations which were to be found sometimes with
difficulty in various publications. You may read it in English
(translation thanks to Olivier Sturm) by going to : http://www.aaimm.org/
Then choose "English", and click on : "5. The quarterly Journal:
Musiques Mécaniques Vivantes (MMV)."

Remember too that you will find on the same AAIMM web pages an article
by Eric Brottier and Anthony Chaberlot (published in Journal MMV No 50,
2004) about a large manual or automatic Skinner Residence Organ, which
is under restoration at the Château de Candé, near Tours (about 2 hours
SW from Paris, France).

It is a historical place where former King of England Edward VIII,
Duke of Windsor, married Mrs. Wallace Simpson in 1937 (and Marcel Dupré
was playing the organ), but that is another story.

An English version was made by Robbie Rhodes, and you may read it
by going to : http://www.aaimm.org Then choose "Français", then
"Documents et Archives", then "Quelques articles de notre revue" ...
hump!

A lot of information may be found on the AAIMM web site (although we
acknowledge it would need some simplification in its presentation,
but that would need time, time ...).

With best regards,

Philippe Rouillé (Paris, France)
(Vice-president of the AAIMM)
