Yes, I have loaned lots of rolls for recutting for the past thirty
years. It all started with Ray Siou recuts. He only lost one roll,
which was a Capital A roll labeled from Colfax on it in pencil. The
recut was horrible but then I did get a lot of good recut rolls and
continued to loan him rolls to copy. (Never got back that one roll.)
Then there was the one and only UPS plane crash north of here with a
Seeburg part I had borrowed to copy from Dave Ramey. That cost me lots
of money but I still borrowed and loaned parts to others. I can't be
a hermit, as much as I would like to think of myself as self-sustaining.
I would have no new rolls at all if I was a hermit. It is calling other
collectors, writing to MMD, and all the other things one has to do to
keep the hobby going. At least it is for me.
I was able to get 100 different Wurlitzer APP rolls recut and twenty
lucky collectors were able to expand their roll collection. They are
also among the few that can say they have five new arrangements from
the house of Reblitz for their Wurlitzer to play.
It is harder to sell rolls than just a mention in the MMDigest.
You have to use eBay (I dread that one), AMICA bulletin, MBSI, the
telephone (in my case), or something to let people constantly know you
have rolls for sale. I personally don't think about all the people
that sell rolls nor do I know them all. I know there is a resource
page somewhere on the 'Net, and it has been published in the AMICA
bulletin but I didn't pay much attention to it as I knew it was
incomplete. It takes constant calling and selling to sell the rolls.
