Sorry, it simply cannot be said enough: do not respond to spam or visit
any web site contained in spam or a suspected fraud.
Responding to spam or phishing email simply lets the sender know that
your address is valid. There is no "safe" way to respond or "ping" the
spammer/phisher. A human won't read your reply and they could not care
less even if they did read it. The spammer's computer WILL read your
reply and update their email list with a double checkmark by your name
-- "Here is a live one!" You will receive further spam/phishing attacks
for as long as that address is valid.
Web site visits are simply more dangerous. There are new and deadly
ways for a malicious web server to infect your machine daily. This is
sort of like looking for your lost rattlesnake in a dark room with your
bare hands. Sooner or later you fill find it!
Most of you good MMD folks run Windows. I do, too, on some machines.
A recent test showed the mean time to infection for an unprotected
Windows machine was 18 minutes. After that time the Windows box had
been hijacked and used a slave to attack other Windows boxes. The Mac
and Linux boxes [computers] in that same test remained alive and well
even through repeated attacks. Think about it.
