In the current thread on potions for cleaning electrical contacts the
use of a product from Radio Shack called 'Tuner Cleaner' was proposed.
As a former TV technician (from the days when mechanical tuners ruled),
I would advise against using this. Many such aerosol cleaners contained
a lubricant as well as a cleaning solvent, the idea being that it would
both clean and lube in the same treatment. Unfortunately the lubricant
residue became a magnet for more dust and dirt, necessitating _more_
frequent cleaning.
Our shop used only a pure solvent for tuner cleaning, there being
little real need for the lubrication. The solvent then in use was
Freon TF, now banned for allegedly doing violence to the ozone layer.
Replacement -- and more expensive -- formulations are now available.
