All I want for Christmas is to play my new rolls!
Greetings. I am a new owner and have just purchased my first rolls.
I am having lots of problems playing them and need your help, and
while I am at it, I have a few other questions, too.
We have a 1924 Aeolian Duo-Art upright. The piano came with a few
dozen rolls, which play perfectly. To celebrate Christmas, I have
purchased some old (1920s-40s) rolls and some new ones (can I say
QRS?). Many of the rolls are not tracking right. By "tracking" I
mean that the holes in the paper are not moving over the corresponding
holes on the tracker bar.
Is there some adjustment I need to make to the piano or could the
rolls themselves be the source of the problem? Is there any special
trick to playing rolls besides just putting them on the piano and
turning it on?
Also, when I purchased the piano, several people told me that the
only major care a player needs is to be played -- and we do play the
piano several times a week. But I am concerned that the piano might
need routine service attention too. Does it? If so, who should do
it: my engineer husband or someone who has actual piano experience?
If we are going to do the work, is there a book you recommend? If
I need a serviceman, how do I find him?
Looking forward to reading your answers so I can still have my
Christmas concert.
