Bill Kap's nickelodeon back up and playing
I found some information on Bill Kap, the fabricator of many fine
nickelodeons built from new Aeolian Pianolas. I have just restored
one that is 22 years old, with the new "Wonder Light" on it, and it
needed very little except for those blasted plastic valves blocks that
Aeolian built it with. I replaced all of those with Denis Wilkinson's
new plastic valves. There is a vast improvement. The piano is able
to play softer or louder and it can balance with the percussions now.
The other instruments include snare drum, bass drum, wood block,
tambourine; the accordion is the solo instrument. The piano action
needed all new abstract cloth and keyboard needed bushing and leveling.
There were about 30 broken strings that got replaced as well. The
counter showed it had only played 20 thousand songs.
Unfortunately, it does not have a coin counter on it. Does anyone know
of a coin counter module I can install on it so that it can take more
quarters without rejecting them like it does now?
The one thing you must know if you use these Wilkinson valves is you
must sand the open side before you glue them onto the decks. One, the
open side is not perfectly flat, and two, the slick plastic does not
stick to the PVC glue very well. Also, it is tricky drilling the ones
for the solo that need the extra elbow added to the top chamber. You
will probably break three or four. I did.
Does anyone know if Bill Kap has email? Does he still make
nickelodeons? Can he or someone send me the sandblast pattern for the
large center glass with the two arches in it?
The latest information I have for him is below and I haven't been able
to get anyone to answer when I call. (Anyone with his email address?)
