Howard Jensen asked about making a set of wooden pipes for the
Wurlitzer 104/105 band organ using the simplified construction
explained in the MMD article by Marc Elbasani.
I have made a set of pipes for my organ project similar to these.
While I have not had the opportunity to compare these with a set of
original Wurlitzer pipes directly, the sound seems to me to be very
similar. I ordered the brass tongues and tuning wires from Organ
Supply Industries rather than cutting brass stock for the tongues
myself. I have not tried to burnish all the tongues that I have
constructed as yet, but the ones I have finished sound good. OSI
required pipe frequencies and operating pressure.
Also, I have made an AutoCAD (release 14) drawing of these pipes with
a table of dimensions for 18 notes, which covers the 104/105 and larger
sizes, and will forward a bitmap of the drawing to Robbie under a
separate e-mail, along with a couple of photos showing construction.
I will be glad to send by regular mail or e-mail a copy of this drawing
and photos for anyone's use.
It has been suggested that the rectangular boot area of the pipe be
made with ridges at the back so that the boots could slip on from the
back rather than fastening a cover on the front as I have done, and that
is something that I would like to try, but have not gotten to it yet.
